Cultural Landscapes Documentation Training
What is LanD2027?
LanD2027 - The Cultural Landscapes Documentation Training is a practice-oriented programme focused on documenting cultural landscapes as dynamic, living systems, using traditional and advanced digital tools and methodologies.
The course is an intensive programme combining theoretical and practical learning components. It includes online sessions, lectures, demonstrations, and culminates in a hands-on field training in Al Ain, using the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hili Oasis cultural landscape as a case study.
The LanD2027 programme aims to strengthen the capacity of emerging professionals from the MENA region and equip participants with approaches and tools to support informed decision making and the management of cultural landscapes.

The training is co-organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi and the CHEDAR (Cultural HEritage Digitalization And Resilience) project, with the expertise of ICOMOS International Scientific Committees (ISCs) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

- Methods for recording intangible cultural heritage and knowledge systems
- People-centred ethnographic and participatory methods
- Nature- culture approach
- Collaborative Platforms and data management workflows.
Course Completion & Certification
An OpenBadge Certificate (international standard 1EDTECH) of completion will be issued to participants who have attended and completed the full programme, including all online theoretical sessions and on-site training components.
Who can apply?
LanD2027 is open to 20 emerging professionals and early- to mid-career practitioners from the MENA Region, with a background in any of the following disciplines:
- Architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning
- Archaeology and heritage conservation
- Geography, GIS, and environmental sciences
- Anthropology, ethnography, and social sciences
- Heritage management and policy.
Language
The course will be conducted in English.
Eligibility requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Between three and five years of professional experience in heritage
- The ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary, international teams.
Familiarity with heritage documentation or fieldwork methods is considered an asset.
What are the course costs?
Course fee: 750 USD (Scholarships available upon request).
- Applicants are expected to cover the costs of their participation (international travel and course fee).
- The organisers will cover domestic travel within UAE, accommodation and meals in Al Ain.
- Depending on the availability of funding, the course organisers may be able to offer a limited number of scholarships to candidates based on each request.
Insurance
All participants are required to have health and accident insurance covering the entire duration of the course.
Visas
DCT Abu Dhabi can provide visa support for participants who require a visa to travel to the UAE.
