THE PILLARS OF THE RESEARCH CENTRE

CHEDAR is built upon four pillars that define its operational structure and the mechanisms through which partners collaborate

Documentation and Digitalization

Digitalization, in all its forms, is used to create digital resources that document and prevent the loss of cultural heritage.

Strategies are developed to recover and enhance existing digital data to ensure the sustainability of digital practices and preserve historical memory.

Advanced tools are designed to manage knowledge and information relating to cultural assets, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for data analysis and processing.

Valorization and Accessibility

It explores new ways of using cultural heritage through digital technologies, helping to make it more accessible and inclusive. The Center encourages the adoption of best practices for the sustainable management of cultural heritage, considering the entire life cycle of the assets, the interventions carried out, their environmental impact (carbon footprint) and their integration into the cultural ecosystem. It also encourages the re-use of digital data in the creative industries to breathe new life into heritage through design, digital art, extended reality and other forms of innovative expression.

Conservation and Safeguarding

It integrates advanced survey tools, 3D digitalization and restoration techniques to address cultural heritage conservation in an innovative way, also including traditional practices and processes in the context of environmental and economic sustainability.

Strategies will be adopted to prevent damage and manage risk, focusing on natural events (earthquakes, floods, climate change) and anthropogenic threats (conflict, vandalism, neglect).

Climate Change and Risk

The Mediterranean is recognised as a real climate hotspot, where the effects of climate change are particularly evident and urgent. The Centre acts through: the analysis of the vulnerability of cultural heritage to climate factors and the development of adaptation strategies, monitoring and mitigation of environmental impacts, for the long-term resilience of cultural heritage.

STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRE

The CHEDAR Research Centre aims to:

  1. Adopt a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to cultural heritage management, with a focus on environmental and anthropogenic risks.
  2. Build robust and effective collaborative networks among institutions, researchers, practitioners and stakeholders in the cultural sector for the growth of an inclusive cultural heritage ecosystem.
  3. Promote international partnerships for research and higher education activities in line with European and global strategies.
  4. Transfer research results to the operational cultural heritage sector and facilitate their adoption through tools, protocols and best practices.
  5. Develop training and refresher courses for cultural heritage institutions, operators and professionals, with an open and inclusive vision.
  6. Establish a permanent observatory to map and monitor emerging technologies and best practices for the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage in Italy and Europe.
